MARINE RESOURCES
The long sea and Chilka coast line is the source of rich marine products in the district. Besides this the coast line serves as a rich resource of lime shells. As a consequence this district supplies sizable portion of total lime needs of the State. Ganjam and Humma area and the area near the mouth of river Bahuda and Rushikulya are the rich sources of salt production, which caters not only to the needs of the district but also of the state. A major industry, Jayshree Chemicals has been set up at Ganjam utilising salt as its raw material. The total salt producing area of the district is about 5,500 acres, out of which 1238 acres are under co-operative societies fold and the rest are with private lease basis. On an average about 50,000 to 60,000 tons of salt are produced annually.
